Washington State Jewish Historical Society Celebrates Storage Grant for their Upcoming Archival Management System
Seattle, WA (January 5, 2023): The Washington State Jewish Historical Society is excited and grateful to announce the opportunity to partner with Permanent.org through their Byte4Byte program.
Permanent.org is the platform chosen by the WSJHS is using to build a new archival management system for Jewish communities in Washington state. This portal will host a repository for our amazing collections—jewels of the community provided to the Society, but not formally accessioned for the past 16 years—along with the new community and family collections we will digitize all around Washington state. After much work this past Legislative Session and with the help of the Government Affairs Department at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and with state Representative Tana Senn spearheading the budget proviso, the WSJHS was granted generous funding to implement a new archival management system. Speaking to many of our state’s senators and representatives throughout, their support helped us achieve this milestone.
The Byte4Byte program provides storage grants to organizations which uplift historically marginalized narratives. The WSJHS is one of 25 organizations that are actively participating in the program. Byte4Byte will give the WSJHS access to technical support, cloud storage, and digital preservation—all which are extremely important and vital to our work, ensuring we can continue to share and preserve history from local Jewish communities for current and future generations.
The WSJHS also acknowledges the work of the Jewish Archives Committee as it is largely due to their dedication and commitment that our history has been and will continue being preserved through 2022, via the Washington State Jewish Archives at the University of Washington. We hope to have future collaborations with UW and are looking forward to sharing our new online archive with communities all over Washington State, which we are building from the ground up.
This is only the beginning, and we are looking forward to sharing more of our work behind the scenes with Permanent.org as we continue building our new archival management system for our community to utilize and enjoy.
