Jews of the Pacific Coast: Reinventing Community on America's Edge - From the California Gold Rush of 1849 to the explosion of population centers in the Southwest in the 1980s, Jews have played a significant role in shaping America's West Coast. Through their mercantile networks, cultural innovations, philanthropic institutions, and political leadership, western Jews created a distinctive identity. In Jews of the Pacific Coast, Ellen Eisenberg, Ava F. Kahn, and William Toll have joined together to write the first interpretive history of the Jews of this region.

Who’s Minding the Store? Travels to the Summit at First Hill
Exhibit Dates: NOW!
Where: The Summit At First Hill • 1200 University Street • Seattle, WA 98101
Cost: WSJHS Members - Free

The WSJHS would like to thank the The Summit At First Hill for hosting this extraordinary exhibit. In order to show the whole "Who’s Minding the Store?" exhibit, we are showing it in installments. Each mini-exhibit focuses on some of Washington State’s earliest Jewish entrepreneurs, large and small, some of whom provided: equipment, tools, clothing, bedding, food and financial support to community. WSJHS believes that history comes alive through the little details. Sol Amon, who joined his father Jack, in the Pike Place market, is now known as the "Cod Father." Ralph Mackoff, who had men’s wear stores in Spokane, was known as "2 pants Ralph". Morris Rosen, who became the founder of Alaskan Copper Works, worked on the construction of the Panama Canal, earning 68 cents an hour. Ultimately, many of these businessmen shaped and supported the industries that grew. Washington State owes much of its infrastructure, commercial foundations and charitable beginnings to the vision and influence of its early Jewish pioneers. We invite you to learn more about these inspiring individuals as you enjoy this display created by the Washington State Jewish Historical Society.

Art Feinglass is back for an encore presentation of Jewish Women in Film: Reflections in a Hollywood Mirror. If you missed Feinglass' presentation last November -- or if you want to see it again -- now is your chance.

Clips from classic films and behind-the-scenes commentary will present a fascinating look at Jewish women in film. From Eugenie Besserer as Al Jolson's Yiddishe Mama in The Jazz Singer (1927) to Shelly Winters in The Poseidon Adventure (1972), and from Barbara Streisand in The Way We Were (1973) to Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin (1980), Hollywood's Jewish heroines have shaped public and private images of American Jewish women.

Art Feinglass has lectured on Jewish literature and film in Seattle and New York. He is also a writer and producer of live theater in both cities. His program of children's plays based on folk tales from around the world will be presented at MOHAI on Sunday, August 22nd and will include a classic Jewish folk tale, "The House That Was Too Small." He is producing and directing the award-winning play, "The Last Seder," which will be performed at Temple Beth Am during Passover 2011.

WSJHS is co-sponsoring this event with Hadassah of Redmond Ridge.
